Understanding Google Search Console Emails

Google commonly emails about small, non-critical errors - typically there is no need for concern.

If you receive an email about a Search Console - the email itself contains very little information. You will need to click the link to the Search Console to view detail in the Google Search Console Dashboard.

Should you want to share this information with Floranext, we are unable to diagnose issues based on this email alone. Please click the email link and snapshot the Google Search Console.

Follow the blue button link from your Google Search Console Email.

Note: The email itself does not provide enough information to properly review the warning.

Google Search Console - Common Warnings (Non Critical)

Google commonly emails about small, non-critical errors - typically there is no need for concern. Here are some common errors:

Not found (404)

Typically 404 warnings are not cause for concern. Some common causes may be:

  • A product or content page was recently disabled.
  • A product or content page's name was edited, creating a new URL, and disabling the old URL.
  • A category may have been moved, which can sometimes cause product page URLs to be updated automatically. Floranext does this to avoid possible duplicate URLs.

Blocked by robots.txt

Typically blocked by robots.txt warnings are not cause for concern.

Every website has a page called Robots.txt which is used to direct Google and other search engines to relevant pages, or even to avoid pages that should not show on search engine results. Some common pages that may be blocked by Robots.txt include:

  • Customer Account internal pages (hidden from robots.txt for security)
  • Admin login internal pages (hidden from robots.txt for security)
  • Certain filtered views of Category Pages, for example views like sorting pages by price from high to low or sorting by product name (removed from Google to prevent duplicate page errors)

Crawled - currently not indexed

Typically Crawled - currently not indexed warnings are not cause for concern.

Google looked at a page, but based on its content decided not to index the page. One common cause could be that you have multiple pages with identical, or nearly identical content.

Page with redirect

Typically Pages with redirect warnings are not cause for concern.

Redirects are fairly common practice and can be very important to ensure visitors can find your website. They are used to ensure that multiple URLs go to the same webpage when necessary. Search engines only want to index a single URL per webpage. Some common redirects you may see are:

  • http://yourdomain.com - this redirect brings a visitor to your site even if they forget the "s" in https://.
  • www.yourdomain.com - visitors to your site may think they need to add "www." at the front of your domain. The "www." is not actually required, but because it is commonly entered. Floranext ensures that searching for this URL brings the user to your site.
  • Changes to product or content pages can sometimes cause changes in their URL. This can also sometimes create a redirect from the old URL to the new one.

"Canonical" warnings

Typically canonical warnings are not cause for concern.

Sometimes multiple URLs can lead to the same webpage. A common example could be if you have a product named "Roses" that is on your "Romance" category page. This could mean that both yourdomain.com/roses AND yourdomain.com/romance/roses BOTH link to the same product page.

Floranext would normally provide a search engine with a "Canonical" link to youdomain.com/roses, as it is likely the most ideal URL to index.

Google may sometimes decide that a different URL is best to index, instead of the one that Floranext provides. Note: This does mean that you should have a URL indexed that leads to the page that Google is reporting.

Sharing Information with Floranext

To share information from your Google Search Console directly with Floranext, please capture any screenshots from the page this link loads.

This will more accurately describe the warning and should include the links affected.

Please also share some of the links that Google Search Console provides as examples so that we may review the webpage to understand the report warning better.
